On Day 4, the West Indian bowlers dominated the entire day as made the tourists to score only 257 for 8 in their second innings while facing a first-innings deficit of 239 and lead by 18 with two wickets in hand at stumps on Thursday.
Kemar Roach bowled skilfully on a placid Queen’s Park Oval pitch to claim 3 for 53 while fellow pacer Jerome Taylor collected 2 for 46. Left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn took 2 for 62.
As far as Kiwis are concerned, their batting did not fail completely as Kane Williamson top-scored with 52 while BJ Watling also proved solid with unbeaten 36 and shared a resolute, undefeated ninth-wicket stand of 43 with Mark Craig, 29 not out. The pair supported their team to sail into the final day and lifted slim hopes of the tourists’ preserving their 1-0 lead in the series.
But the West Indies did a great job by picking wickets at regular intervals during after New Zealand resumed on 73 for 1 on Day 4.
The reliable overnight partnership between Williamson and opener Tom Latham took New Zealand to 84 before Benn successfully trapped Latham to glove to silly point. The left-hander scored 36 while sharing a 75-run stand with Williamson.
The New Zealand’s resistance was tested once again as pacer Roach finally prised out Williamson, who nibbled outside the off stump and edged to wicketkeeper and captain, Denesh Ramdin.
And just before the break, Benn made the spectators cheer once again as he dived full length to his right to haul in a one-handed catch from Jimmy Neesham’s crunching drive, who departed for 7 with the Kiwis leaning at 121 for 4.
Ross Taylor and Watling added 32 before Gabriel made a crucial breakthrough by making Taylor edge a drive behind at 36.
Jerome Taylor was rewarded for his accurate swing bowling and trapped Hamish Rutherford lbw on 13.
Before tea, the Kiwis who were 181 for 6, quickly slumped to 212 for 8 as Roach struck twice with the second new ball against aggressive tailenders.
Ish Sodhi, on 14, edged a cut to Ramdin, while Tim Southee, 15, spooned a leading edge to extra cover towards Kirk Edwards.
But the job was incomplete as Watling and Craig held out for almost two hours to the close.
