Canada added two more medals to the medal count on the waters of Eton Dorney, bringing the team’s tally to 13.
Kayaker Adam van Koeverden won silver in the men’s K1-1,000m kayak final at the London 2012 Olympic Games just minutes before teammate Mark Oldershaw took bronze in the men’s C1-1,000m canoe race.
“Overall I am happy with my race. I tried to get as much air in my lungs as possible and keep it going,” van Koeverden. “Everybody is out there trying to win the race and I feel like my race plan went well. I was looking for a good finish. I can find the silver lining in silver.”
“Everything has lead up to this,” Oldershaw said. “I’ve been dreaming about this since I was a little kid, every birthday blowing out the candles, every shooting star, every eyelash has been dreaming of getting on this podium. Canoeing is so Canadian. I’m so proud to canoe for Canada.”
“What a great start to the day – two medals!” said 2012 Chef de Mission Mark Tewksbury. “I am so proud to have been on site today to see these these two exceptional athletes pull off two incredible performances. The whole country can be proud of what Adam and Mark have accomplished today.”
“Both Adam and Mark have worked so hard to get where they are today,” said Assistant Chef de Mission Sylvie Bernier. “Four Olympic medals for Adam is an amazing accomplishment. Mark earning his family’s first Olympic medal is an inspiring story. I am so very happy to see them both on the Olympic podium today.”
“Adam van Koeverden achieved iconic status in Canadian high performance sport even before he entered his kayak this morning,” said Marcel Aubut, President of the Canadian Olympic Committee. “The shine of this silver medal is not only a symbol of accomplishment for himself and for his country, but is also a reflection of the fire of excellence that burns within him. Once again, he has made all Canadians proud.”
“Mark Oldershaw has taken his family’s Olympic history from legacy to legend with this stunning bronze medal finish this morning,” continued Aubut. “Watching his burst of power deliver his amazing result will be something that his whole Canadian Olympic family will remember for a long time to come.”
