FC Edmonton and St. Joseph High School are pleased to announce the formation of the club’s first-ever Residency Program.

Twelve local soccer players were selected through a three-day combine held earlier this month. The 12 players have enrolled at St. Joseph and will begin classes right away. The players will form the majority of FC Edmonton’s reserve team and will be coached by Jeff Paulus.

Paulus, a National B Licensed coach, has enjoyed plenty of success on the local soccer scene. Most recently, he won the Gold medal in the CCAA National Championships this year with NAIT and was named the 2011 ACAC Coach of the Year.

Paulus has worked with national team prospect candidates from U14 to U17 as a staff coach for the National Training Centre Prairie Region and has been the head coach of the Alberta Soccer Association’s Provincial Program for the past five years.

“I joined FC Edmonton full time in December and am already extremely excited about the progress we’ve made in terms of our player development,” Paulus said. “Having this Residency Program for our reserve players will help us attract the best local talent and give these kids an opportunity to chase their dreams of professional soccer while continuing their education.”

Paul Kelly will act as the students’ advisor while they’re enrolled at St. Joe’s. Kelly played four years of soccer at Eastern Illinois University. He was also the assistant coach of the U17 boy’s provincial team for four years and the associate men’s soccer coach at Grant MacEwan College for 12 years.**

“St. Joseph High School offers excellent programming options and opportunities for high level athletes engaged in sports that require flexible scheduling,” Kelly said. “The flagship program, Personalized Self Directed Learning, allows students to participate in 21st century learning/teaching methods, affording students the opportunity to work at their own pace in a customized learning environment.”

FC Edmonton’s reserve team will play a full schedule in the Alberta Major Soccer League starting in May.
