Monterrey and Santos to meet on Wednesday in 1st leg of CCL final
The two-legged 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League final kicks-off Wednesday, when defending champion Monterrey hosts Santos Laguna. A week later Santos will welcome its northern Mexican rival to Torreon.
In advance of their meeting, both lost domestic league matches on Saturday, with each using largely reserve-based starting line-ups.
Monterrey fell 1-0 to Atlas at the Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara. The loss moved Monterrey back to fifth place on 28 points.
Santos dropped a 3-1 decision to América at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. After going down 1-0 early, Carlos Ochoa leveled for the Guerreros in the 44th minute. América, however, scored two goals in the second half to seal the victory. Santos is now in second place, one point behind Tigres, its opponent next Sunday.
Monterrey enters the 1st leg on a seven-game CCL unbeaten streak, including six-consecutive wins before a 1-1 tie with Pumas in its last outing. The Rayados have conceded one goal or less in 11-straight CCL games and have six wins and two draws in eight all-time CCL matches against Mexican opposition.
Santos is winless in eight of its last nine CCL away games, but has set a record for the most goals scored in a single CCL season with 34.
CFU Club Championship to resume next week
First round play in the CFU Club Championship continues this Tuesday through Saturday, with Group 2 and Group 3 action.
All Group 2 games will be contested at Providence Stadium in Guyana between 2011/12 Champions League qualifier Alpha United (Guyana), Hubentut Fortuna (Curacao), Inter Moengotapoe (Suriname) and Milerock (Guyana).
Group 3 will be played in Haiti and is comprised of Victory SC (Haiti), Baltimore SC (Haiti), Centro Barber (Curacao) and Bayamon FC (Puerto Rico).
George Town FC of the Cayman Islands has already advanced to the second round of the competition by winning Group 1 last month.
The three, first-round group winners and best runner-up will advance to the second round, where they will be joined by four seeded teams in an eight-team, two-group second round.
The top two teams from each second-round group will qualify for a final group stage. Three teams from the Caribbean club championship will qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League.
Futsal draw results announced
Host and defending champion Guatemala will face the United States, Panama and the winner of a playoff between Canada and El Salvador in Group A at the 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship, following a draw held on Thursday in Guatemala City.
Group B will consist of Cuba, Mexico, Costa Rica and St. Kitts and Nevis.
The tournament will be played July 2-8 at the Domo Polideportivo in Guatemala City, Guatemala, marking the third time that the Central American nation has hosted the event.
To determine the last qualifier, Canada and El Salvador will face off in a two-leg playoff on June 28 and 29, also at the Domo Polideportivo in Guatemala City.
For the first time, CONCACAF will send four teams to a FIFA Futsal World Cup which will be held Nov. 2-18, 2012, in Thailand.
U-17 Women’s Championship referees revealed
On Monday, CONCACAF announced the names of the 20 referees and assistants selected to work the CONCACAF Under-17 Women’s Championship.
The referees are: Lucila Venegas (MEX), Annia Navarrete (CUB), Quetzali Alvarado (MEX), Gillian Martindale (BRB), Yesli Rivas (SLV), Alicia Villatoro (GUA), Michelle Pye (CAN), Dianne Ferreira-James (GUY), Cardella Samuels (JAM), Lixy Enriquez (MEX) and Irasema Aguilera (CUB).
The assistants participating will be Mady Santos (HON), Nykasie Liverpool (GUY), Kimberly Moreira (CRC), Verónica Pérez (USA), Marisol Salazar (GUA), Suzanne Morisset (CAN), Shirley Perello (HON), Stacy Ann Greyson (JAM) and Milagros Leonardo (DOM).
The U-17 Women’s Championship is set for May 2-12 in Guatemala City, with three teams qualifying for the U-17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan, September 22-October 13.
Costa Rica and Honduras draw in San Jose
Costa Rica and visiting Honduras played to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday at the Estadio Nacional in San Jose Costa Rica.
David Suazo gave the current Central American champion a 24th minute lead with his 17th career international goal, but Olman Vargas leveled for the host five minutes after the interval.
The game was part of both teams’ preparations for World Cup qualifying, which resumes in the CONCACAF region in June with third-round action. The result extended Honduras’ unbeaten streak against Costa Rica to five-consecutive games.
