CONCACAF creates road map to reform
As a central component of its continued transformation, CONCACAF announced Tuesday the creation of three new committees – Integrity, Audit & Compliance and Ethics – following an Executive Committee meeting at the confederation’s office in Miami Beach, Florida.
“The creation of these committees is the next logical step in the transformation of CONCACAF, demonstrating that we are committed to transparency and reform,” said CONCACAF President, Jeffrey Webb, who was elected at the CONCACAF Congress on May 23 in Budapest, Hungary. “We are working meticulously with professionals possessing competence and integrity to fill positions on each committee.
“The Integrity Committee will be completely independent and will be free to carry out their respective mandates.”
The Executive Committee also approved Panama City, Panama, as the location for the next Extraordinary Congress that will be held later this year. As previously disclosed at last month’s Congress, the gathering in Central America will devote special attention to governance, audit and revision of CONCACAF’s statutes to ensure that they are in compliance with FIFA requirements.
Cuba, Panama and Guatemala open with victories in Futsal Championship
Cuba, Panama and host Guatemala grabbed victories on the opening day of the 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship.
Cuba routed St. Kitts & Nevis 10-0 in the second game of the day to move into the lead of Group B. Eduardo Morales scored three goals for the Cubans, while Jhonnet Martinez assisted on four.
Later that night, Panama posted a 5-2 win over the United States. Miguel Lasso scored four goals for the Canaleros.
Host and defending champion Guatemala closed the night with a 7-3 win over Canada. Humberto Escobar scored twice in each half to help the Guatemalans overcome an early 2-0 deficit.
Canada became the eighth and final team to qualify for the finals after getting past El Salvador in a two-game playoff 7-6 on aggregate (1-4 loss on Thursday, 6-2 win on Friday). Canada goalkeeper Joshua Lemos scored with five seconds left on the clock in the second leg after teammate Matthew Rios had tied the series just seconds earlier.
The tournament opened Monday morning with a 4-4 tie between Costa Rica and Mexico. Mexico went ahead 4-2 in the second half thanks to goals from Miguel Limon and Francisco Cati. Edwin Cubillo and Christopher Molina, however, scored in less than a minute late in the second half to give the Ticos a point.
Honduras sweeps Guatemala in U-20 series
Honduras defeated visiting Guatemala twice by the same 1-0 scoreline in two Under-20 friendly matches played on Saturday and Sunday.
Cristopher Urmeneta scored in the series opener, while Maynor Cruz scored the game’s only in the second encounter.
Both teams are currently preparing for UNCAF U-20 Qualifying, which will begin with Group A play, July 17-19, in San Pedro Sula, featuring host Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Group B, to be played in will be played in Coatepeque, Guatemala, July 25-29, consists of the host, El Salvador and Panama.
CFU U-17 Qualifying to begin this week
Caribbean qualifying for the 2013 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship will begin Thursday, with Cuba and Haiti hosting four-team groups and two others set for later in the month.
Cuba will face Aruba, Bahamas and Puerto Rico at Havana’s Estadio Pedro Marrero, while Haiti will be home against Curacao, the Dominican Republic and St. Lucia at Stade Sylvio Cator in Port-au-Prince July 5-9.

The group winners and the best second-place team will advance to a final round of qualifying August 19-30 at a venue to be determined later to decide the Caribbean’s five berths in the CONCACAF finals, set for April 6-19 in Panama.
Mexico wins Copa Saprissa
The Mexican Under-17 team defeated the United States 3-1 on Sunday to win the Copa Saprissa title in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Luis Hernandez (22′) opened the scoring for Mexico before Alejandro Diaz doubled the lead scored a minute later. The U.S. halved the deficit with a goal from Rubio Rubin (53′), but Ulises Rivas (64′) restored the two-goal cushion and sealed the win.
Mexico went 7-0-0 in the tournament, defeating the United States twice (3-1, 3-0), Club America of Mexico (2-0), Honduras (2-0), Linafa of Costa Rica (1-0), Costa Rica (3-0) and Chorrillo FC of Panama (3-0).
ABFA to hold grassroots course
The Antigua and Barbuda Football Association will host a FIFA Members Association Grassroots Course/Festival beginning Tuesday and finishing Saturday.
The course will be led by FIFA Instructor Marcos Tinoco and will focus on recruiting techniques, coaching skills and identifying the needs of youth players in grassroots programs.
U.S. Women defeat Canada in send-off match
A goal by Amy Rodriguez five minutes before time gave the U.S. women’s team a 2-1 victory over rival Canada Saturday at the Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
The U.S. opened the scoring in the 15th minute, when Canada’s Carmelina Moscato put the ball into her own net. The Maple Leafs tied the match after 57 minutes on a goal from Melissa Tancredi.
The match served as a send-off for the United States before the Olympics commence, while Canada will now travel to Switzerland for a two-week camp.
