In what will be a blockbuster first-round match, Venus will take on 2006 Rogers Cup champion Ana Ivanovic. Serena will open her tournament against Ukraine’s Alona Bondarenko and could potentially play Kim Clijsters in the third round.
The top eight seeds receive a bye. World No. 1 and defending champion Caroline Wozniacki will play the winner of Yanina Wickmayer and Roberta Vinci, while No. 3 seed and 2010 finalist Vera Zvonareva will take on the victor of Nadia Petrova and Jarmila Gajdosova.
Should the seeds hold up, Wozniacki would face 2011 French Open champion Li Na in the quarter-finals, while Zvonareva would take on 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova. Maria Sharapova sits in the same quarter as Victoria Azarenka and Francesca Schiavone would be Clijsters’ final eight foe.
Canada’s No. 1 player Rebecca Marino will make her Rogers Cup main draw debut against Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova, who at No. 42 is ranked one spot below the Vancouver native. Eugenie Bouchard will play world No. 11 Andrea Petkovic of Germany, Stephanie Dubois will take on a qualifier, and Aleksandra Wozniak will be against Israel’s Shahar Peer.
Other interesting first-round matches to keep an eye on include Jelena Jankovic versus Julia Goerges, Flavia Pennetta against Maria Kirilenko, and Daniela Hantuchova opposite Gisela Dulko.
As an added element at the official draw event, Serena Williams donated HP Omni All-in-One PCs computers to children from the San Romanoway Revitalization Association in the Jane/Finch Community.
