Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, ON) qualified for the main draw of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, Florida on Tuesday thanks to a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Yuichi Sugita of Japan.
Dancevic served nine aces in the match and saved eight of the ten break points he faced. On Monday, he defeated Brazil’s Ricardo Mello in straight sets in his opening match. This marks the first time the 27-year-old Canadian will be in the main draw of an ATP World Tour event since the U.S. Open last September.
The last time Dancevic was in the main draw of an ATP event that is not a Grand Slam was at Johannesburg in January of 2011. Dancevic reached the second round in Miami in 2009 where he fell to Novak Djokovic. He comes into this year’s tournament on a winning streak having taken home the title at the Dallas Challenger in Texas last week.
Dancevic joins his compatriots Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) in the main draw at the combined ATP Masters 1000 and WTA Premier event in Key Biscayne. While Dancevic awaits the identity of his first round opponent, Raonic is seeded no. 26 in the men’s draw and benefits from an opening round bye. He will play with either a qualifier or Dudi Sela of Israel in round two before a potential third round match up against world no. 4 Andy Murray of Great Britain.
For her part, Wozniak, who also won a title last week at the Nassau Challenger in the Bahamas, was awarded a wildcard in the women’s main draw and will take on Greece’s Eleni Danilidou in her first match.
