Route 66 has been glorified through the years through books, TV shows, movies and music. In honor of this historic highway, Skidmore Contemporary Art debuts its latest group show, “Route 66.” The group exhibition conjures up memories of the past through iconic images.

An infamous highway, Route 66 is also known as Will Rogers Highway runs from Chicago to Los Angeles connecting the states: Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

Celebrating a simpler America, the images of Route 66 feature vintage cars, iconic signs, diners, motels, and gas stations. The exhibition brings to life the classic images of the 50s and 60s.

Artists featured include: Alan Gorman, Daryl Gortner, James Guçwa, Cheryl Kelley, Dave Lefner, Eric Nash, Cesar Santander, Robert Townsend, and Dennis Ziemienski

Artist Daryl Gortner was recently featured in the December group show at Skidmore Contemporary Art and is happy to be participating in “Route 66.” She talks about her work, "I am drawn to paint objects that have intense color and offer the opportunity to paint reflections."

When asked if she has a favorite from all her paintings, she replies, “I don’t have a favorite because when I create a painting I only will create and paint something that I really have a passion about.  When I am passionate about something I will put my heart and soul into it and therefore that is why I am proud of all my artworks. I never want to look back and say that I didn’t enjoy creating it or I wish I would have put more effort into creating it.”

Artist Dave Lefner’s medium of choice is "reduction linocuts", a very labor-intensive, lost art.  He explains, “It was created by Picasso and his printer in the 1950s. In a nutshell, I use a single block of linoleum to print a multi-colored piece, hand-carving each stage before I print.  It's definitely a unique art, mainly because it requires so much patience & skill that it's not meant for everyone. It was a perfect fit for me.”

“Route 66” opens this Saturday, January 5th at Skidmore Contemporary Art at Bergamot Station. The artist reception will be held from 3-5 pm. http://skidmorecontemporaryart.com/
