Glenn Gould was one of the most celebrated pianists of the twentieth century. Despite his widespread success, he gave up concert performance early in his career to focus on studio recording and take on other musical projects, including broadcasting, composing, conducting, and writing. This walking tour will navigate the landmark places and institutions where Gould pursued this work, examining their impact on his music, philosophy, and relationship with technology. In particular, we will explore Goulds creative uses of technology in the recording studio and his ideas about the influence of technology on musical aesthetics and communication, drawing a parallel with his understanding of the relationship between the built and natural environments in Toronto. The walk will end with an optional group lunch at Frans Restaurant on College Street, the oldest surviving location of Goulds favourite diner. Guided by Erin Scheffer and Melissa Wong as part of Janes Walk Toronto 2013. This event is FREE for all ages and will take place rain or shine.
