Alex Theatre (Glendale, CA)
Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 black comedy Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb gleefully satirizes Cold War politics, serving as a humorous and wickedly pointed response to the doomsday fears of the 1950s. The film is most memorable for Peter Sellars’ masterful performance, playing three different roles: an eccentric German scientist, the eggheaded president of the U.S. and a stuffy British Exchange Programme liaison officer. The story is driven by the actions of an unhinged U.S. Air Force General who orders a first strike nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. The president, his staff and a Royal Air Force officer must work desperately to recall the bombers and prevent a nuclear apocalypse. The film won four BAFTA awards and was nominated for four Oscars. It has also appeared in five of the American Film Institute’s “100 Years …” lists. Special Guest Pablo Ferro, who did the main titles design and worked with Kubrick on several projects, will be interviewed before the evening screening.
