Horror movies work best with great music and at least one haunting track. So we expect something nice here.

Music:

Two very skilled veteran singers, Shaan and Mahalakshmi Iyer, pump all they have into a melodious romantic duet, 'Sau Dil Bhi Jo Hote', that sounds extremely appealing when on, but has little recall value. The lyrics (Puneet Sharma) are fairly interesting with lines that go 'Tha ek dil hi hamara / Jo tumpe hain haare / Sau dil bhi jo hote / Saare tere hote' which is a kind of 'thought' extension of the legendary Anand Bakshi's 'Ae kaash kabhi aisa hota / Ke do dil hote seene mein / Ek toot bhi jaata ishq mein to / Taqleef na hoti jeene mein' in the 1994 Mohra. The lyrics are familiar but quite poetic.

Musically, we liked the different (for today's times) the prelude that follows the tune and the intermittent use of the sitar. Effortlessly, this emerges as the noteworthy track on this score. However, a simpler weave in the composition and better orchestration would have made this track linger, which it does not.

The title-track, 'Machhli Title' has two versions – the first one by Amit Mishra and Hricha Narayana being the effects-oriented one. Mishra tries to incorporate horror elements in here but they are more of non-musical gimmicks, and the track is irreparably corrupted because this goes on for more than half the length of the track.

However, unlike the expected 'hit' title, theme or principal track of a horror movie, the two versions do not linger in memory, lyrically or musically. The second 'remix' version with Amit Mishra sounding gruff simply does not register despite the attempt at rousing music. 'Saturday Night Hai' (Neeraj Shridhar-Paroma Dasgupta) has contemporary lingo (Prashant Ingole) in lines like 'Yeh Saturday night hai / Yaara hona bas tight hai / Duniya kuch bhi kahe / Haan haan kehti rahe / Yaara masti mein sab right hai') with little scope for imagination. The singers, especially Neeraj Shridhar, do a decent job of trying to bolster the composition, despite the clear drowning of their vocals by the overloud orchestration. This rhythmic and pulsating track would have probably still worked in a bigger setup.

'Bade Bhaiya Rangbaaz' is written, composed and sung by Amit Mishra and is an intentionally heady, noisy, folksy chorus number with the usual element of naughtiness and raunchy quotient.

Overall:

For a horror movie, this is a weak score that will not compensate for the lack of face-value of the film. Wish they had made more of an effort on the music.

Our Pick:

'Sau Dil Bhi Jo Hote'

Music: Amit Mishra
Lyrics: Puneet Sharma, Amit Mishra & Prashant Ingole
