The Obama administration official in charge of the Affordable Care Act, 63-year-old Marilyn Tavenner, has announced her plans to step down from her position next month onward. Former Virginia state health official’s decision has disappointed the insurance and hospital lobbies, while also triggering a tussle with Congressional Republicans over who will replace her.

Tavenner was made head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in 2010 due to her experience as a nurse and a former hospital executive at HCA Holdings (HCA). She enjoyed support of not only the government but also the Republicans, including former House Republican leader Eric Cantor, who has since been defeated and is no longer in Congress. Tavenner was perceived as a pleasant official to the health insurance industry and medical care providers, and gained respect from lobbies and among both Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill.

Meanwhile, the health industry also praised Tavenner after hearing about her depature on Friday. Hospital lobby chief executive and president of the American Hospital Association, Richard Umbdenstock, stated that “as a nurse, health care executive and government official she brought a practical perspective to running a very complex government agency.” It was added that “her ability to work in a bipartisan manner with legislators and listen carefully to the concerns of hospitals and other stakeholders was key to her effectiveness as a leader. Moreover, she has provided leadership in making care better by working with the provider community in launching key performance improvement efforts.”
