Law enforcement bodies arrested 29-year-old Luka Rocco Magnotta in Berlin Monday. The Canadian was allegedly involved in a dreadful Montreal ice pick murder and beheading of a Chinese student. The gruesome act was shot in a film and uploaded on internet.
Allegedly, Magnotta brutally killed 33-year-old Lin Jun, who was a student at Concordia University. Jun belonged to Wuhan, Hubei, China and was reported missing on May 29.
As a result of four-day international search, Magnotta was finally taken into police custody near an Internet café. In the meanwhile, French authorities claim to be investigating if Magnotta travelled from Paris to Berlin over the weekend.
“Today, Mr. Magnotta was seen by a Berlin police patrol car and they checked his identity. Somebody recognized him and (then) all the police recognized him,” Berlin police spokesperson Stefan Redlich said. “They arrested him and now he’s been brought to a prison, so he will probably see a judge tomorrow (Tuesday).”
According to Redlich, police responded to an anonymous call and Magnotta was arrested after thorough inquiry. Magnotta has been arrested without incident and will appear in court Tuesday.
“Police were called by a person from the internet café. Colleagues went the café and arrested a person we are sure is Mr. Magnotta,” said Captain Busch of the Berlin police. “He is in jail, and will go to a judge tomorrow. Our goal is to bring him to Canada as quickly as possible.”
Canadian authorities are likely to travel to Berlin to take the custody of Magnotta at their earliest. When his family was contacted in Peterborough, Ont., they declined to give any remarks.
