Latest reports confirm that city is planning to pay a final tribute to one of the Calgary’s most popular mayors, Ralph Klein, as per his family’s request. It is informed that the memorial is tentatively scheduled for Friday at the Jack Singer Concert Hall, however, city officials are yet to finalize the details. Even though it is not officially endorsed but it is common knowledge that the family will not seek a state funeral, although it would have been welcomed by many of his supporters.

A Political scientist currently serving as Ralph Klein Chair in Media Studies at Mount Royal University, David Taras, guessed that the populist premier would have appreciated a low-key public service. “Ralph was a man of the people.” Taras alleged that “he wasn’t somebody who saw himself as a big government official surrounded by ceremony. He really saw himself as one of the folks. That may be the emotion behind it.” The flags outside City Hall and McDougall Centre were lowered to half-mast on Friday, whereas an endorsed official online book of condolences has also been put up by the provincial government.

Current Premier, Alison Redford, claims to have offered any provincial resources needed, though she reports that none has been acquired by the family. Redford, who is expected to speak at the service, alleged that “we have said to the Klein family for some time now that we would absolutely respect their wishes in terms of what they would like to have happen to remember premier Klein.”
