Police are investigating the events leading up to the discovery of an envelope containing white powder received at Oshawa City Hall Wednesday afternoon.

On Wednesday July 7, 2010, at approximately 12 noon, officers from Central East Division responded to Oshawa City Hall shipping/receiving department, following the discovery of an envelope containing an unknown white powder substance, addressed to the Tax Department. City Hall staff members immediately notified police and the Hazmat Team with Oshawa Fire Services and the Durham Region Health Department. Officers contained the scene and seized the package for analysis to the Ministry of Health Laboratory in Etobicoke. Police canvassed the scene for evidence. No injuries were reported. No arrests have been made.

Several hours later, police investigators were notified of the preliminary lab testing results of the substance which indicated it was a non-hazardous. Final test results indicating the exact chemical analysis will be made known in the near future to investigators.

Police do not have any suspects and are appealing to the public for assistance with this investigation.
