Since May 2010, police have received several complaints from women, of young men accosting them in various secluded areas of Malton. These areas include parks and walkways between apartment buildings and townhouses.
In each of the incidents, the women have had money and visible jewellery forcibly taken from them by the suspects. Fortunately, nobody was injured during any of these incidents and no weapons were ever seen or used.
Investigators determined that the robberies had been committed by a group of youths living in the area, and loosely associated to each other. The investigation also determined that not all of the youths were present during all of the robberies.
On Thursday, August 5, 2010, three Young Offenders were arrested and charged in relation to these incidents.
One youth was held in custody overnight and is scheduled to return to the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on Wednesday, September 8, 2010. The other two youths are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Tuesday, September 7, 2010.
On Friday, August 6, 2010, a fourth Young Offender was arrested and also charged in relation to these incidents. This youth has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Saturday, August 7, 2010.
Due to their ages, the names of these youths cannot be released, as per the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
