In a yet another abrupt and unexpected unfolding of the ongoing Senate spending scandal, former Conservative Sen. Patrick Brazeau unveiled that Tory House leader, Claude Carignan, offered him a backroom deal intimidating him to be free of a pending suspension. At Brazeau’s time to address the Senate amid hearing of the motion to suspend three senators – namely he, Pamela Wallin and Mike Duffy, Brazeau alleged that Carignan explicitly mentioned to him that the government would go easier on him in exchange for a public apology.

Brazeau further explained that the discussion took place at around 10 a.m. Friday, when he claims he remained adamant that he has done nothing wrong, and demanded an open hearing into an audit of his expense claims. He stated that “I was essentially offered a backroom deal,” explaining that “the backroom deal was that if I stood in this chamber, apologized to Canadians and took responsibility for my actions, that my punishment would be lesser than what is being proposed.” While the senators were listening to his speech astonishingly, an eminently angry Brazeau left the Senate. A short while after, Carignan rose to speak and confirmed that he spoke to Brazeau but said it was in a “friendly” manner, asserting that his comments were misinterpreted by Brazeau.

These latest accusations made by Brazeau have further intensified the already heated air of unaccustomed drama and chaos that pervades the Senate this week. Before Brazeau’s speech, Sen. Pamela Wallin accused her former party of trying to remove her from the Senate for reasons of political expediency.
