While Canada was celebrating the New Year Eve’s countdown, a Mississauga mom was busy giving birth to twin daughters. And even though both twin sisters were born just 38 seconds apart, they will be sharing different birthdays, and that also in different birth years. The proud mother, Lindsay Salgueiro, delivered the last baby of 2013 at Mississauga’s Credit Valley Hospital before giving birth to the first baby of 2014.

Officials have confirmed that Baby Gabriela was indeed the last baby born before midnight, weighing six pounds and 16 ounces, while her sister Sophia waited until the New Year, arriving seconds later at five pounds and 15 ounces. Speaking from a hospital bed, Salgueiro alleged that “they are getting all the attention,” and “they were the last baby here in the hospital to be (born) for the year and the first one of the year also.” The girls came as a surprise to both Salgueiro and her husband, since the couple’s due date was not expected to arrive until Jan. 19.

Salgueiro confirmed later that both girls are healthy and doing well, while adding that she is excited to get back to normal. She mentioned in a joking manner that “I’m so relieved that I got my belly out of the way and I’m back to normal now.” In addition to the twins, two other newborns also entered the world at exactly 12 a.m., though via different mothers.
