It has been confirmed that 22-year-old man from Calgary who converted to Islam almost a year ago and joined the fight against Bashar Al-Assad in Syria, Damian Clairmont, has been killed. A self-proclaimed “American Jihadi” fighting in Syria, Abu Turab Al-Muhajir, confirmed the news via a post on Twitter, in which he alleged that Clairmont, who went by Mustafa Al-Gharib, was “killed while defending himself and his brothers from the #FSA [Free Syrian Army] onslaught in Aleppo.”

Conversing with the National Post‘s Stewart Bell last year, Clairmont elucidated that his decision to join the fight in Syria completely relied on religious terms, as he alleged to be working towards the afterlife. He mentioned that “I am where I am because I believe in something.” On the other hand, Clairmont’s mother revealed that he dropped out of high school after making a failed attempt to commit suicide but received closure after converting to Islam. She exposed that CSIS had contacted her to let her know that her son was linked to an extremist group they had been monitoring for two years.

In a previous conversation with Clairmont, he had mentioned that “the benefit for myself in terms of the worldly life is most certainly back in Canada where I could see my family, indulge in fornication and infidelity legally and limitlessly and stagger around poisoned on intoxicants and then lie to myself and the world about ‘Freedom’ and how fantastic it is.”
