Ontario’s Liberal government has daringly announced to bring in motion two by-elections only a few weeks ahead of the crucial budget which critiques speculate might result in a general election. Putting the mood of electorate to test, Premier Kathleen Wynne announced that the by-elections will take place on Feb. 13 as in the ridings of Niagara Falls and Thornhill.

The seat for Niagara Falls has been a long stronghold for Liberal Kim Craitor, who is known for often criticizing his own government for the sake of his riding. He faced serious competition by the Progressive Conservatives in the last election, whereas the NDP also had a strong campaign. Consequently, both opposition parties are anticipated to launch a bold competition to snatch the seat away from the Liberals since Mr. Craitor resigned in September. Meanwhile, Thornhill’s seat was vacated last month by Tory Peter Shurman, who resigned amid expenses dispute with party leader Tim Hudak. The riding has often changed hands between the Liberals and PCs before, and both parties will battle for it.

Soon after making the announcement, Ms. Wynne symbolically marked a record-breaking grape harvest and highlighted the government’s plan to get more Ontario wines on to LCBO shelves, along with an announcement earlier this week about her government building a long-awaited new hospital in Niagara Falls. She alleged that timing of both announcements was coincidental as she mentioned that “in both these cases — whether it’s the grape and wine strategy or whether it is the hospital announcement — both of these things have been in the works for many, many months, for a long time.” It was added that “there have to be strategic decisions. We are making those decisions.”
