Even though there is a lot of time before Prime Minister Stephen Harper leaves for his first visit to the Middle East, the trip has already sparked its first controversy. In an official letter addressed to Mr. Harper from a Canadian Muslim group, it urged Mr. Harper’s office to disallow a Toronto rabbi from travelling along with the PM. The letter sent by the National Council of Canadian Muslims on Tuesday said it objected to the presence of Toronto Rabbi, Daniel Korobkin, as part of Harper’s official delegation.

Mr. Korobkin is a senior rabbi at the largest Orthodox congregation in Canada, i.e. Beth Avraham Yosef Congregation, who also holds the position of regional vice-president of the Rabbinical Council of America. According to the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), Korobkin should be disqualified from accompanying the PM on his tour because, he “introduced, defended and praised” two American anti-Muslim campaigners in September. It was explained that the founders of a group called Stop Islamization of America, Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer, received brief remarks from Korobkin at an event in Toronto.

Executive director of NCCM, Ihsaan Gardee, mentioned in his organization’s letter dated Jan. 14 that “Mr. Korobkin has chosen to align himself with some of the most recognized and vitriolic anti-Muslim activists of our time.” It was added that “the highest political office in our nation should not lend its legitimacy to such parties and views that are entirely contrary to our shared values of mutual understanding, acceptance and respect.”
