Progressive Conservative Leader, Tim Hudak, has announced to have laid off his Essex candidate, Dave Brister, who is known for criticizing the party’s controversial right-to-work proposals. In a brief statement issued by Hudak on Tuesday, he stated that “I have made the decision that Dave will no longer stand as the Ontario PC candidate for Essex.” He also added that “Ontario needs jobs and no obstacle will stand in the way of our efforts to put this province on the path to prosperity.”

However, on the contrary, Brister mentioned in a tweet that he was asked to give up his views on the right-to-work policies in exchange for running for the party but he refused. He stated “I was informed earlier this afternoon that PC HQ prefers followers to leaders and that I am no longer the PC candidate in Essex.” In addition to that, he added that “I support Tim Hudak and I don’t support ‘right to work.’” In a tweet posted earlier in the day, Brister stated that “so now what happens? Let’s see. I’m not the loudest — just first to say it.”

Meanwhile, a party source revealed that Brister was actually expelled from the campaign roster because he disclosed the nature of confidential discussions by colleagues, not because he opposed right-to-work policies. A PC white policy paper has recommended that the provincial government end mandatory union membership and dues, restore secret certification votes and force unions to collect their own dues directly from workers.
