In a statement issued by retired Canadian Army commander and new Liberal Party adviser, Andrew Leslie, he has calmly defended the $72,000 amount his former employer spent on moving him into a Rockcliffe Park house and stated that he will not “descend to the level of the competition.” During an interview, the former lieutenant-general and chief of the land staff mentioned that “we’ll let the Canadian public judge for themselves,” and quickly added that “I’m pretty confident that they’ll come to an appropriate conclusion.”

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rob Nicholson mentioned in an official statement that he is ordering a formal review into the defence department’s decision to pay $72,000 in order to move Leslie, and his wife, at the time of his retirement in 2011 from one Rockcliffe residence to another a few blocks away. Nicholson alleged that the in-city expense claims “appear grossly excessive. As such, I will be asking the Department of National Defence to examine how an in-city move could possibly total over $72,000.” He elucidated that “in the meantime, it is important for Andrew Leslie to explain why he believes this is a reasonable expense for hard working Canadians to absorb. This is a matter of judgment and the responsible use of taxpayers dollars.”

The report that cited controversy-spurring expense claim on Saturday night also included rumors indicating his possible election run against the Conservative incumbent, Royal Galipeau, in Ottawa-Orléans in 2015. During the Sunday interview, Leslie alleged “I am planning to remain above the fray,” but added that “Well, I am in the fray, aren’t I? — but I’m trying to not to descend to the level of the competition.”
