Two major consumer goods company, namely Energizer Holdings and paper maker Cascades, have announced to close their plants in Quebec, i.e. a move anticipated to cost 625 jobs. According to Cascades, it plans to shut down its Kraft paper manufacturing facility in East Angus, which will leave almost 175 employees without jobs. The closure is scheduled for October of this year.

A press release issued by President and Chief Operating Officer of Cascades Specialty Products Group, Luc Langevin, said that “with the arrival of new competitors that convert newsprint paper machines to produce Kraft paper, and the ongoing weakening of market conditions for our products, the East Angus plant has not managed to maintain a competitive edge in the market despite significant investments and serious recovery efforts.” In addition to that, company added that a failed attempt was made to sell the plant to its employees. It promised to try to find other jobs in the company for affected workers.

Meanwhile, Energizer mentioned in a statement on Tuesday that it will shut down its feminine care facility in Montreal by 2017. It revealed that approximately company 450 jobs are feared to be affected by the shutdown, which is part of a restructuring program that will see production consolidated at Energizer’s Delaware facility. President and Chief Operating Officer of Energizer Personal Care, David Hatfield, alleged that “this was a difficult but necessary decision to maintain the company’s position in this highly competitive business.” He said that “this decision is being announced now to maximize planning and transition time for all colleagues and the community.”
