The pilot of a CF-18 was struck by lightning in midair while he was on his way to an air show, prompting an immediate but safe landing at the Whitecourt Airport on Thursday morning. According to the spokesman for the Royal Canadian Air Force, Alexandre Cadieux, the pilot heard a loud bang when lightning hit the plane. Cadieux explained that “he advised air traffic control of the incident in case the situation deteriorated, which it did not, and then he continued with his flight and landed safely at Whitecourt Airport.”

Airport maintenance crews have concluded their inspection and confirmed that the plane did not receive any damage while the pilot remained uninjured too. Cadieux revealed that the pilot was almost 60 nautical miles away from the airport at the time when the plane was struck. Meanwhile, airport manager William Stewart reiterated that no damage was visible when the plane landed. Stewart alleged that “being hit can cause electrical problems and that kind of thing, but he landed without a problem” and added that but “we’re really happy that we didn’t end up with any problems.”

Both the pilot and the plane are part of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s CF-18 Demonstration Team. The plane was especially painted to participate in The Hometown Heroes air show in Whitecourt this weekend. Cadieux alleged that the pilot and plane are both anticipated to participate in the air show as planned. The Canadian Forces Snowbirds and SkyHawks parachute team are also part of the show.
