A major report released on Thursday has found that Ontarian students are one of the most computer-savvy among all the international bodies participating. The report highlighted that Ontario students scored an average of 547 points out of a possible 600, i.e. 47 points higher than the international average of 500.

The report pointed out that more than one-third of Ontario students were in the top two of five levels of computer literacy while the international average was less than one quarter. Whereas on the other hand, the report also found that Ontario teachers had a high confidence level when it came to completing tasks like attaching files to emails, online shopping and installing software. EQAO Board of Directors, Chair Brian Desbiens, mentioned in a press release that “it should inspire both pride and confidence that Ontario students fared so well on the (study), given how important computer information literacy is to life in the digital age.” The Education Quality and Accountability Office, EQAO, worked jointly with the Ontario portion of the study and cooperatively released the report with the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada. Almost 3,700 randomly selected students participated in the study from almost 200 schools in Ontario.

Meanwhile, the overall international study looked into 60,000 Grade 8 students in 20 countries. They were evaluated on their computer literacy, like how to collect, use, share and create information with a computer. The report said that almost all Ontario students enjoyed using computers and have been using them for at least three years.
