Police have announced to have charged former CBC radio host, Jian Ghomeshi, with four counts of sexual assault and one count of “overcome resistance – choking” almost a month after he was fired by the national broadcaster. According to Canada’s criminal code, that latter charge implies that he is alleged to have had attempted to “render another person insensible, unconscious or incapable of resistance.” The maximum punishment for the charge is life in prison.
47-year-old Ghomeshi was fired from Q on CBC radio on Oct. 26 after the broadcaster allegedly saw “graphic evidence” of injuries to a woman. Thereafter, at least nine women have come forward with allegations that he physically or sexually assaulted them, including Canadian actress Lucy DeCoutere and lawyer Reva Seth. In their remarks, Toronto Police confirmed to have begun their investigation on Oct. 31 and inspected “several allegations of sexual assault.”
Soon after he was fired, Ghomeshi mentioned in a Facebook post that CBC had wrongly targeted him for participating in what he called consensual sex. Ghomeshi refrained from publicly speaking about the allegations beyond Facebook postings, whereas his social media accounts are also deleted since then. Earlier, Ghomeshi had filed a $55 million lawsuit against the CBC claiming defamation and breach of confidence but that has also been withdrawn after Ghomeshi agreed to pay $18,000 to cover the broadcaster’s legal costs. Police has confirmed that Ghomeshi voluntarily surrendered himself to authorities on Wednesday morning and is anticipated to appear in court this afternoon.
