Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced to have named a renowned lawyer, Suzanne Côté, to the Supreme Court of Canada, who has become the first woman from private practice to be directly appointed to the top court of the country. She is set to fill the vacancy of Justice Louis LeBel, who retires Sunday.

Head of the Montreal litigation group at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, Côté, can be described as one of the most experienced litigators in the country with extensive expertise in civil and commercial litigation over a 34-year career. While making the announcement on Thursday, Mr. Harper stated that “with her wealth of legal knowledge and decades of experience, Ms. Côté will be a tremendous benefit to this important Canadian institution,” adding that “her appointment is the result of broad consultations with prominent members of the Quebec legal community and we believe she will be a valued addition to Canada’s highest court.” Côté is Harper’s seventh justices’ appointment to the high court since 2006, while also being the second woman appointed by the current Conservative government, following Justice Andromache Karakatsanis.

The Prime Minister’s Office explained that the government consulted several institutions before filling the post, including the Government of Quebec, the Chief Justice of Canada, the Chief Justice of Quebec, the Chief Justice of the Quebec Superior Court, the Canadian Bar Association, and the Barreau du Québec,. Soon after the decision was announced, Chief Justice McLachlin issued a statement applauding the decision, which will go into effective on Dec. 1.
