According to a report published on Thursday detailing a survey by Nanos Research and the Institute for Research on Public Policy, Canadians are not happy about the performance of the federal Conservative government and the way it’s leading the country. However, the report identified that the response is still relatively positive than they were last year.

The survey revealed that 45 per cent of respondents rated the performance of Stephen Harper’s government as poor or very poor, while 37 per cent thought it was somewhat good. Moreover, forty-eight per cent of respondents said the country is going in the “wrong direction” and 37 per cent said the country was going in the “right direction.” In addition to that, 50 per cent of respondents alleged that Canada’s reputation had downed since last year while 52 per cent rated the relationship between the federal government and its provincial counterparts is also declining. The report highlighted that respondents from Ontario and Atlantic Canada had the highest percentage of respondents alleging that federal-provincial relations had not improved in the past year.

Chairman of Nanos Research, Nik Nanos, stated that “what we know empirically is that 2013 was a very bad year for Stephen Harper and the Conservatives,” adding that “2014 is a little better, but generally the view of many Canadians, of the government and its performance and the direction of the country, is still negative. [The Conservatives] are not out of the political woods by any stretch of the imagination.”
