Winnipeg Mayor, Brian Bowman, has recently mentioned in his remarks that the boil water advisory issued for the city will most likely be relieved sometime on Thursday afternoon. According to Bowman, a second set of re-testing has been completed and now the authorities are waiting for the results to come back. The advisory was issued when six E.coli samples turned out positive on Tuesday.

The first set of re-testing took place on Wednesday and the results were negative, after which the province decided not to lift the boil water advisory until a second round of clean tests come back negative as well. Mayor Brian Bowman urged Winnipeggers to remain calm and respect the advisory until the province’s medical officer of health gives the OK. He stated that “we have to make sure that we look out for the safety of Winnipeggers and we respect the integrity of the processes that are laid out in terms of the oversight by the province and our responsibility to notify Winnipeggers. So we’re following that process.”

Officials have confirmed that different city staff members have conducted both the retesting samples. Acting director of Water and Waste Department, Geoff Patton, stated that the city will investigate why the tests likely came back with a false positive. He alleged that “in terms of these six false positives, there is an investigation that needs to go on to look at these. But that is what the testing protocol is all about. This is drinking water. This is public health.”
