toronto’s inside workers delay strike until mondayThe president of CUPE Local 79, i.e. the union representing more than 20,000 of the city’s inside workers, have announced to have extended their deadline for negotiations with the City of Toronto and confirmed that the union’s workers will not walk out until 12:01 a.m. Monday at the earliest.

According to the union’s president, Tim McGuire, the discussions are continuing between the city and the union but he would refrain from commenting on the level of progress. McGuire stated that the union “would like to see the city meet us halfway,” as he confirmed that “the city and local 79 have agreed to a 24-extension.” Speaking from outside of the union negotiating room at the Sheraton Hotel, McGuire assured that “we’re deep into the process to find a settlement.” Local 79 represents 23,100 employees including child care and shelter workers, nurses, cleaners and planners. The union is negotiating on issues like job stability, including more notice of shift schedules, guaranteed minimum hours and some workers getting full-time permanent status.

McGuire revealed that negotiations continued into the night on Friday and then after a period of rest, they were back at it in the morning and the next update is now expected sometime Sunday. In his latest remarks on Saturday, Maguire stressed that he is aiming to find a settlement. He stated that “we’d like to see the city meet us halfway,” while confirming that both parties are interested in working together to find a deal.
