montreal protesters demand ban on horse-drawn carriagesA number of protesters convened on the Montreal City Hall on Sunday to demand Mayor Denis Coderre to ban two-wheeled horse-drawn carriages called caleches in response to a video that showed collision between one of them and a car surfaced earlier this week.

According to the video, a driverless caleche stumbles onto the roof a car at an intersection in Montreal on Wednesday. The caleche stumbles a few more times after getting off of the vehicle and finally regains its footing and trots away. The protesters on Sunday stressed that they’re worried about the animals’ working conditions. One of the organizers of the protest, Sylvia Kump, explained that “It’s a barbaric form of entertainment” and explained that “I mean, we have to evolve. Montreal has to evolve.” Whereas another protester highlighted concerns about horses’ health on hot summer days, alleging that “horses were nice in the field, not on city streets when it is 30 degrees.”

Whereas on the other hand, caleche drivers have alleged that adequate regulations are already in place and they’re taking care of their animals. One of the drivers explained that “lots of (veterinarians) are checking the horses really regularly, and inspectors … they come to see us (regularly).” It was also stressed that the “the accident, it’s very, very, very rare” and many of the horses are used to operating in the city and thrive on attention from riders. The driver concluded that “I think it is a plus for the city. The service and these guys are outstanding.”
