Toronto police arrest three for human trafficking

Members of the Toronto Police Service Human Trafficking Enforcement Team have arrested three people in connection to a human trafficking investigation.

It is alleged that:

– in September 2016, an 18-year-old woman was recruited, procured and forced into the sex trade by a man

– during this time, the victim was introduced to another man and a woman who assisted in procuring the victim into the sex trade

– the victim was transported to various hotels in Toronto

– photos of her, in certain degrees of undress, were taken and posted on Backpages.com, advertising for sexual services

– during this time, the two men controlled the victim by intimidating her through threats

– the victim was able to escape and contact police

On Thursday, November 17, 2016, three people were arrested and charged.

Chibuike Nwagwu, 31, of Toronto, was charged with:

1. Trafficking in Persons by Recruiting (over 18)
2. Procuring
3. Material Benefit from Trafficking in Persons (Over 18)
4. Material Benefit from Sexual Services
5. Assault
6. Forcible Confinement
7. Obstruct Peace Officer

Justin Ferguson, 25, of Toronto was charged with:

1. Trafficking in Persons by Recruiting (over 18)
2. Procuring
3. Material Benefit from Trafficking in Persons (Over 18)
4. Material Benefit from Sexual Services

Jocelyn Martinez, 18, of Toronto was charged with:

1. Trafficking in Persons by Exercising Control (over 18)
2. Material Benefit from Trafficking in Persons (Over 18)
3. Material Benefit from Sexual Services
4. Advertising Another Person’s Sexual Services

On November 18, 2016, Nwagwu and Martinez appeared at Toronto West Courts, 2201 Finch Ave. W., in courtroom 205.

On December 2, 2016, Ferguson appeared by video remand at Toronto West Courts, 2201 Finch Ave. W., in courtroom 203.

Police are concerned there may be other victims.
