A recent poll reveals growing support for the Scottish independence on Tuesday just a couple of weeks ahead of the historic vote on September 18.

Sterling fell by almost a cent against the dollar to $1.6521 today after a YouGov poll have showed that the backing for ‘Yes’ campaign jumped by eight points in the last month to 47per cent, compared with 53 per cent against the partition. It means the unionist lead had shrunk to 6 percentage points from 22 a month ago.

This major shift in opinion may lead to the real prospect for the first time that the secessionists could achieve their goal of breaking the 307-year-old union with England.

YouGov President Peter Kellner, who is regarded as one of Britain’s most respected pollsters, has said: “A ‘Yes’ victory is now a real possibility. A close finish looks likely.”

A vote in favour of independence would be followed by negotiations with London regarding the issues related to sterling, the national debt, North Sea oil and the future of Britain’s nuclear submarine base in Scotland ahead of independence pencilled in for March 24, 2016.

The campaign director of Better Together, Blair McDougall has said: “We need the silent majority who back a no vote to do their bit. Whether it’s voting on the day, knocking on doors, making phone calls or speaking to friends and family, the silent majority should feel confident in speaking up.

“The nationalists talk as if they are winning, but the truth is this is yet another poll showing the campaign for Scotland to stay in the UK in the lead.”

If Scots choose to leave the United Kingdom in independence referendum, Prime Minister David Cameron would face calls to step down ahead of a national election in May 2015 while Labour’s chances of gaining a majority could be spoiled by losing its Scottish lawmakers.
