In an announcement made by Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt, it has been confirmed that the UK Government will be imposing a new contract on junior doctors this summer after negotiations failed with the British Medical Association. According to Hunt, the Government made a “best and final” offer to the BMA on Wednesday afternoon, as thousands of doctors were on strike, but it was rejected
Mr Hunt explained that the government’s “door remained open” for three years as it wanted both sides to compromise. However, he pointed out that “the BMA proved ultimately unwilling to do that.” The Government’s chief negotiator, Sir David Dalton, has written to Mr Hunt that the negotiations have reached the “end of the road.” Both sides are undeterred to have their way on the point of weekend pay as the Government insists Saturday to be a normal working day, whereas the BMA rejects the idea and calls for Saturdays to attract a premium rate of pay.
In his remarks, Mr Hunt assured that the junior doctors will receive a basic salary of 13.5 per cent and insisted that no trainee working within contracted hours will have their pay cut. Moreover, Mr Hunt pointed out that the maximum number of consecutive long days will be reduced from 7 to 5 and no doctor will ever be rostered consecutive weekends. He added that those working 1 in 4 or more Saturdays will receive a pay premium of 30 per cent.
