The incident resulted in one fatality and injured five others.

In a telephonic conversation with Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Verma, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh inquired about the person who died in the explosion this morning in Naya Bazar. Rajnath, who is currently in Bahrain, was briefed by Verma about the details around the incident and the steps taken by the police so far related to the incident. Thereafter, Rajnath instructed Delhi Police Commissioner to arrest those involved in the incident as soon as possible and take all possible measures to ensure peace in the city. Reports confirm that the blast took place in Naya Bazaar area near Chandi Chowk in north Delhi at around 10:30 am.

Local police has not yet revealed the identity of the deceased but the site of explosion is being inspected by Delhi’s anti-terror wing and Special Cell. Later, the crime and forensic teams also reached the site of the blast to pick up the samples. Joint CP Northern Range, Virendra Chahal, explained that “Prima facie it looks like a firecracker explosion in a jute bag. Though, the nature of the blast is yet to be ascertained as doubts remain if the explosion was caused by firecrackers or cylinder.”
