Shortly after Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided DMK leader MK Stalin’s house in Chennai, the Finance Minister P Chidambaram called it off. The CBI was also raiding 18 other places across Tamil Nadu while investigating the case of alleged tax evasion on imported cars.

“In this case I have to say that I strongly disapprove of the action. This action will be misunderstood,” Chidambaram said.

According to Chidambaram, neither was he notified about the raid, nor did he give permission to CBI. The CBI seems to have taken a leap in its investigation merely two days after the DMK alienated itself from the UPA government. Stalin is perceived to be the force behind the move to quit the UPA. Stalin believes the raid was part of political vendetta against his party.

“We left the UPA that is why CBI raided us. We will deal with it in accordance with the law,” Stalin maintained.

Other parliamentarians including Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Shukla also condemned the raid and urged CBI to promptly explain its line of action. CBI reports to PM Manmohan Singh whereas Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde is part of the loop of authority.

On Wednesday, an FIR was lodged against a senior Intelligence Officer of Directorate of Revenue Murganandam and two others for exploiting their official position by ignoring the matter of imported cars. The FIR states that the involved officials entered into a criminal conspiracy with unidentified men and caused a loss of Rs 20 crore to the exchequer. Apparently, Stalin’s son is using one of the imported cars.
