This Thursday morning there were unconfirmed reports that there was a drone strike in the North Waziristan region, which left six suspected militants dead. The drone strike was in Shawal area. According to Dawn News, later the reports suggested that the six suspected militants were killed in mortar fire.

North Waziristan is the same tribal region of North Pakistan where the army is conducting an operation against the extremist militants. North Waziristan is also one of the seven tribal districts which shares a border with Afghanistan where there are strong holds of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. The operation Zarb-e-Azb is still underway even after months of operation whereas simultaneously the army launched another operation by the name of Khyber1 which is focusing on removing stronghold of militants in the region called Khyber.

According to Dawn News, the operation in Khyber saw an escalation since the attack on Peshawar’s Army Public School that claimed the lives of over 140 people – most of them children. It further added that after the attack, army chief General Raheel Sharif also secured assurances from Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) commander General Joseph Dunford over complete cooperation in security-related matters.
