Toronto Looks to Continue Winning Ways on Saturday with Battle Against Hamilton

Opponents This Week:

(March 20): The Marlies begin their two-game week on Saturday afternoon when they host the Hamilton Bulldogs, AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens, at 4:00 p.m. at Ricoh Coliseum. The game will mark the 10th of 12 meetings between the two clubs. The Bulldogs used overtime to beat the Marlies last Tuesday night, 3-2 in Hamilton. Brendan Mikkelson and Alex Foster scored the two Marlie goals; while Bulldogs’ defenceman Yannick Weber scored the game-winner in overtime. The Marlies hold an all-time record of 28-14-4 against their QEW rivals. Hamilton currently leads the North Division and the Western Conference with a 44-15-3-5 record for 96 points. Hamilton’s 96 points are currently six more than any other team in the conference and 18 more than any team in their division. The Bulldogs have won nine of their past 10 games and have clinched a playoff berth. Saturday’s game in Toronto marks the Bulldogs’ second contest of a seven-game road trip. Each of the Bulldogs’ last four victories has come in extra time. Bulldogs forward Brock Trotter is currently sixth in the AHL in scoring with 28 goals and 36 assists for 64 points. Defenceman P.K. Subban set a Hamilton franchise record two weeks ago for points by a defenceman in a single season. Subban’s assist in their win over Adirondack on March 3 was his 45th point of the season, setting the record. He now has 14 goals and 33 assists to go along with a plus-37 rating, which ranks second in the AHL. The tandem of Cedrick Desjardins and Curtis Sanford has been impressive this season, combining for a league-best 2.21 team goal-against average. Desjardins’ 1.93 goals-against average ranks first in the league; while Sanford’s mark of 2.07 is second.

(March 21): The Marlies and Abbotsford Heat, AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, meet up on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. contest that will air live on CBC. The game will be the seventh meeting, and third at Ricoh Coliseum, between the two clubs. Toronto posts a record of 2-3-0-1 against the Heat through the first six games. The past two of three meetings between the two clubs have been decided in a shootout. The last time these two clubs met was on February 15, with the Heat taking the 5-1 decision in Toronto. Mikael Backlund and Olivier Latendresse each scored twice in the Abbotsford win. The Heat currently ranks tied for second in the North Division with a record of 38-28-2-0 for 78 points. They’ve only lost once in regulation time over their past 10 contests, winning their past two games. After their game on Sunday against the Marlies, the Heat will play six straight home games. Abbotsford ranks first in the American Hockey League in penalty minutes with 1582. The Marlies and Heat have combined for 379 penalty minutes through their first six games this season. Argos Sign QB Cleo Lemon

The Toronto Argonauts Football Club has added a fourth quarterback into the fold with the addition of Cleo Lemon.

Lemon has a wealth of NFL experience as both a starter and backup. His raw athleticism and ability landed him jobs with the Baltimore Ravens, San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars. Jim Barker, Head Coach, Toronto Argonauts, commented, “Cleo is a mobile quarterback with experience as a starter in the NFL. He is smart, accurate and has a reputation as a solid decision-maker. We are excited to watch Cleo compete with our other quarterbacks for the opportunity to lead our club.”

Lemon remarked, “Signing with the Toronto Argonauts is a great opportunity with a great organization. Now it is my responsibility to be in the best shape of my life and learn as much about the Canadian game as possible before I hit the field. I’m excited about this opportunity and intend to take full advantage of it. I believe in preparation and will go full steam ahead in doing my part to help lead this team to future success.”

Double Blue Signs Canadian QB Brannagan

When Argonauts head coach Jim Barker and his staff see something they like, they waste no time in getting it. Immediately following the 2010 CFL Evaluation Camp in Toronto this weekend, the Boatmen set their sights on former Queen’s quarterback Danny Brannagan of Burlington, Ontario and signed him through the 2012 season.

Commented Barker, “We are thrilled to welcome Danny to the Toronto Argonauts. Danny comes from the Pat Sheahan offensive system which is similar to what we do. Based on his success in this offence and his proven leadership, we used the opportunity presented at the CFL Evaluation Camp to see him in action to determine both on the field and in our interview if he possesses the specific skills we were looking for. We believe he does and he is a special individual who brings a lot to the table. He can make all the throws and he understands the Canadian game and how to read defences. We are excited to watch Danny compete with the other quarterbacks we have signed.”

In 2009, Brannagan led the Queen’s Gaels to their first Vanier Cup Championship since 1992, earning Vanier Cup MVP and Yates Cup MVP honours along the way. In a prolific 5 season career at Queen’s, Brannagan passed former Argo Tommy Denison as the leading passer in Gaels history as he commanded a potent offence with a 62.14% completion rate in 2009 and led the nation in TD passes in 2008 with 24, earning him OUA First Team All-Star accolades.

Brannagan remarked, “I’m very excited about this opportunity. I’m fortunate to have had a successful university career and realize that not a lot of people get to compete at the next level. The Argos have a great and storied football program that I’ve followed growing up. I was lucky to meet several members of the coaching staff at the CFL Evaluation Camp and I was very impressed with them. I look forward to going out there and competing for a spot on the team.”
