Hula is more than a plastic hoop from your childhood. It’s more than grass skirts and coconut bras. It’s an ancient, yet still evolving art form that incorporates storytelling, athleticism and some of the most hypnotic choreography ever imagined. No group performs it better than Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu. Founded in 1985 and based in San Francisco, the company of 30 dancers is renowned for its uniquely contemporary style, which incorporates traditional moves with classical, electronic, alternative, dance and pop music. The result is an intoxicating blend of old and new or hula mua — “hula that evolves.” Now this remarkable company brings a bit of the island spirit to Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at the College of the Canyons.
