Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (Los Angeles, CA)
Pierre Beaumarchais had a resume to rival any Renaissance man in history: playwright, inventor, musician, spy, horticulturalist, arms dealer, watchmaker, diplomat and revolutionary. In the opera The Ghosts of Versailles, he finds yet another job as an afterlife entertainer in the court of Louis XVI. Poor Marie Antoinette is bummed about losing her head, so Beaumarchais tries to cheer her up by continuing the stories of his characters from The Marriage of Figaro and The Barber of Seville. These operas within operas, featuring John Corigliano’s glorious music and William F. Hoffman’s uproarious libretto, will have you just as captivated as the French queen.
