Join us on Thursday, August 6th, from 7-9pm, for a FREE concert by Jane Bunnett & Hilario Duran, as a part of Old Town Toronto’s Music in St. James Park concert series. Come before the concert, from 5-7pm, to enjoy a BBQ from the St. Lawrence Market, with proceeds going to the St. James Park rejuvenation.
Toronto’s Jane Bunnett is internationally known for her creative exploration and expression of Afro-Cuban melodies and Cuban jazz. As a soprano saxophonist, flutist and bandleader Jane consistently captivates audiences with her musical technique and virtuosity. Since the early 80’s, when she first became immersed in Cuban music she has continued to travel to, make friends in, and assist musicians in Cuba. She is a multiple Juno Award winner, two-time Grammy Award nominee and recipient of the Order of Canada. 2012 marks 30 years of Jane’s connection and collaboration with Cuba. To celebrate she is releasing a double CD best hits package called “MUNDO” on EMI.
Hilario Duran came to Toronto in 1998 from Havana, Cuba. He is the winner of two JUNO awards, over a dozen National Jazz Awards in Canada and the winner of the #1 Latin Jazz Best Recording of 2010 by Latin Jazz network. He is an arranger, pianist, and composer and has worked with Cuban and American jazz greats such as Chucho Valdes, Arturo Sandoval and Dizzy Gillespie. In Canada, his collaboration with Jane Bunnett has brought them together in large and small groups and duets.
The 2011 CD, Cuban Rhapsody is a blend of traditional Cuban music and Jane and Hilario’s individual brand of jazz. As Nat Chediak, three-time Grammy winning music producer says: “It is the unforced leisurely pace of this outing that makes (Cuban Rhapsody) so winsome.”
