Many pastimes pursued by women in the 19th century are enjoying a resurgence in popularity today. Textile arts such as knitting, ribbon work, needlepoint, and embroidery as well as crafts like paper flower-making and even millinery marvels like fascinators are being explored by a new DIY generation. Indeed, peruse the crafts so meticulously detailed by the doyenne of DIY Martha Stewart and you’ll see regular reference to their roots in the 19th century. In conjunction with Fashion Victims: The Pleasures and Perils of Dress in the 19th Century, the BSM is pleased to announce a series of workshops celebrating those pastimes reflected in the exhibition, while reinventing them with a 21st century twist.
Needlepoint Workshop
Needlepoint or ‘Berlin work’ was a pastime for privileged women in the 19th century, including creating uppers for men’s slippers like those in Fashion Victims. Join workshop leader Johanna Masko as she updates this craft with a small introductory project suitable for framing.
