Meseriya tribesmen pose at the Secretariat General in Unity State after the peace meeting [©Gurtong]The Southern Kordufan tribe of Meseriya last week held a border security meeting with the Unity State Government to settle criminal activities they are accused of related to grazing lands along the bordering States of Sudan and South Sudan.

The Mesiriya first consulted the Mayom County Commissioner Mr. Martin Mashod Deng whose County is bordering them and referred their case to the State Authority.

During the meeting with the State Governor Hon. Taban Deng Gai, Security Advisor Brig. Michael Chiangjiek Geay, the Police Commissioner Major General Elijah Maduk Young and Mayom County Commissioner Martin Mashod Deng, the following was agreed on;

1. Meseriya should avoid supporting militias and showing them the routes from Southern Kordufan to Unity State.
2. Avoid carrying guns when coming for grazing in the dry seasons.
3. Stop renaming villages and rivers in South Sudan
4. Stop killing wild life randomly in the bushes of South Sudan
5. Stop setting fire randomly to avoid forestation and desertification
6. Must be responsible for the loss of life and cattle done by the criminals.
7. Must pay taxes for their cattle grazing each year.
8. Must get veterinary certificate for their cattle from the Republic of South Sudan VET
9. Agreed on 31 cows compensation for any person who lost his life in both side
10. Agreed on the common market establishment outside Mayom Town
11. Agreed on common Court establishment to see the rising issues between the two communities and must be lead by one of the natives and deputized by Miseriya.
12. Police of South Sudan, SPLA and other security organs would provide full security to Miseriya people and other cattle camps and the market.
13. The State Government and the UN are to assist in the establishment of the market and developing it for the provision of the basic services such as water, schools, clinics, roads, electricity and sport centres.

Last year the government of Unity State allowed Meseriya nomads to come to the State in search of grazing land but the State charged them five South Sudanese Pounds for each cow grazing on the land.

The State citizens have also warned the Meseriya nomads of carrying out massive killings during their return home in the rainy season.

The State government has also promised to protect the Meseriya throughout their stay in the State if they promise to prevent militia groups from entering into the State.
