A Prince Edward Island school board does not intend to discontinue handing Bibles out to students in spite of receiving a complaint from a parent. According to Ricky Hood, superintendent for the Eastern School District, the Gideon Society has been gifting Bibles to students for almost half a century.
Recently, one of the parents complained after students were handed over forms to ask parents if they would like their child to receive a copy of Bible. In defense, Hood said it is a service provided by the school and that the school won’t change its services if one parent does not like it.
In Ontario, the Bluewater District School Board is analyzing the so-called service after a parent protested against it last month. On the other hand, a school board in Waterloo decided not to hand over any more bibles to students last year.
“In response, some school boards have opted to ban all distribution of ‘religious’ matter to students. Others have opted to evaluate it on an annual basis, based on the community’s feelings on it, and also make the opportunity available to all religions so as to be fair,” said Kelvin Warkentin, spokesman for Guelph, Ont.-based Gideons.
Ont. premier Dalton McGuinty says it is up to the schools whether to continue with such services or give them up. Hood said his district won’t be looking to review the process.
“We don’t stop doing things because someone doesn’t like it,” he said.
