Security Concerns Along Juba-Kajokeji Road

Central Equatoria State authorities said that a lorry transporting people to Kajokeji from Juba was hijacked by gunmen last week where passengers lost money and valuables of unknown value.

“We received a call last Wednesday from Kajokeji informing us that a lorry ferrying businessmen was hijacked and 500 South Sudanese pounds and mobile phones stolen”, Kajokeji County MP Oliver Mule told Gurtong in Juba.

“It was very difficult to determine who the robbers were as the passengers panicked. They however, confirmed that the men were armed”, he said.

He added that in another incident a motorcyclist was seriously injured before his motor cycle was stolen and his sister raped along the same road.

Drivers at the Juba main parking also lamented the rising insecurity along the road, saying armed robbers are notorious at Moyo Sukur area, translated to mean ‘hot water’, thirty miles from Juba.

They expressed concerns over the laxity of the police to arrest the criminals.

The Juba-Kajokeji road, estimated to measure 75 miles is one of the least developed roads in the state connecting the counties to the state capital.

There is only one wildlife police post in an area that has no communication network.

Early this month, the Eastern Equatoria State Police Commissioner Major General Malok Ring Kiir was killed by unknown gunmen along the Juba-Torit road as he travelled from an official function in Juba.
