Dr. Belebek spoke to the press after he was crowned onto seat as the new Ngok Dinka Chief on Monday replacing late Kuol Deng Kuol.

He said Abyei issue would have been sorted out if only there is committed will from all stakeholders involved.

“What normally brings the problem is what is not solved yet known and what normally doesn’t end is also what brings problem,” Belebek told the journalists.

He accused the Sudanese President Omar Hassan Al Bashir for being responsible for the suffering of the people of Abyei, saying Bashir has no feeling of the problem affecting the people in area.

Abyei, oil disputed area claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan was destroyed and burnt into ashes including the main civil hospital, schools and houses of ordinary citizens by the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and Misseriya militias in May 2011 putting need for basic services at critical challenge and dire need.

Aid agencies said over 100,000 people were displaced during the destruction with several others killed. Trauma of the incident has still remained till date though life has started return into the area.

Residents on ground especially at the Abyei main town live in tukuls with others in left over tents with water mainly being supplied by the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei (UNISFA) who have received criticism for failing to effectively protect the population in the area.

Abyei people are set to hold a referendum in October this year, a vote that will determine if the citizens there will become part of South Sudan or Sudan.

Belebek has called South Sudan and Sudan governments to closely cooperate and sort out the Abyei issue, adding the problem of Abyei unless resolved; it will also remain a problem to all the two governments.

He has called for unity among the people of Abyei, saying: “I want us to stand firm and be strong hearted. I encourage all of us to be strong and forget what has happened-[the killing of Chief Kuol. I want Ngok Dinka to be free and attain freedom.”
