The State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Philip Jiben Ogal said a group of armed people believed to belong to David Yau Yau came from Pibor County and killed innocent people in the state.

“Murle youth belonging to Yau Yau attacked the area at 1: 00 am (May 18th), killing 30 and injuring 16 innocent people in a cold blood while they were sleeping. Among the dead is the chief of a village called Thou Diop Lual and a clinical officer,” Jiben said.

“We visited the area in a government delegation led by the state Governor, Simon Kun Puoc in order to see the victims and pay our condolences to the families who have lost their relatives,” he added.

The minister said the attackers used very modern weapons and ammunitions during the attack.

“They are using modern weapons. We got some cows they have gunned down during the attack. The whole body of the cows swollen and that proved that the ammunitions have very dangerous chemical poison,” he said.

“We want to tell our people in South Sudan that we in Upper Nile state strongly condemned the inhumane practices carried out by David Yau Yau to innocent people that cannot protect themselves,” Jiben said.

The minister said that the cattle, the attackers raided were later on
recovered by some police and Sudan People Liberation Army (SPLA) in the area.

Yau Yau rebelled against South Sudan’s ruling party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) after elections in April 2010 when as an independent candidate, he lost to represent the Gumuruk–Boma constituency in Pibor County at the Jonglei State Assembly.

In 2011, Yau Yau joined the SPLA but rebelled again shortly in April 2012. President Salva Kiir offered amnesty to all South Sudanese rebels fighting the Republic of South Sudan, a move that has got some positive response by some rebels but David Yau Yau is still at large.

Unlike other figures who led rebellions after the 2010 elections, Yau Yau was a civilian and not a member of the army before his rebellion – although when he reconciled with Juba in 2011, he was given the position of General in the SPLA.

Recently, David Yau Yau captured Boma town in Pibor County only to be overrun again by the national army some days later.
