The Ayod County Commissioner Michael Both Malual has at the same time instructed government officials who had deserted duty over the clashes to resume work.

“I hereby instruct all government officials in Ayod County to immediately return to the county to delivergovernment services before the Christmas and  New Year festivities. The situation is back to normal and stability has been restored”, he told journalists at Ayod County’s coordination office in the Jonglei State capital Bor.

He urged all government institutions that had suspended work in the county to resume operations, saying several people had returned after the clashes.

He revealed that over 5,000 returnees from different parts of the county are being hosted at the county headquarters.

The Commissioner announced that all chiefs in the area will be directed to mobilise locals who are still hiding in the villages near Ayod town to return to their villages as there is relative calm.

He pledged the state and county governments’ support in assisting in the return of the communities to their homes.

He assured the residents of support from the South Sudanese army, saying they were there to protect them and their properties.

The highly volatile Jonglei State was among the worst hit in the year-long conflict pitting government forces and rebels allied to former Vice President Dr Riek Machar.

When the fighting broke out in Ayod town, all the government employees in the county fled for safety and the County Commissioner’s office was transferred to Bor town.
