The International Volunteer Day usually recognised on 5 December was designated by the United Nations as an international observance day to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism.
It is an opportunity for volunteers, and volunteer organisations, to raise awareness of, and gain understanding for, the contribution they make to their communities.
The International Committee for Red Cross Head of sub-delegation, Joris Pieter Paululs explains some of their achievement in Jonglei state.
“I think that through many efforts by the South Sudan Red Cross and International Committee for Red Cross, we have been able to achieve a lot that ranges from food distribution in places like Waat.”
Jonglei state’s UNMISS coordinator, Hazel De Wet assured of their support in the state whenever it is needed.
“It is not an easy task, so I want to say from UNMISS please be assured that we will within our capability and within our mandate try our best to ensure that we support you to where we can.”
The Directorate of South Sudan Red Cross, David Gai Deer appreciated the work, commitment and the roles played by the volunteers who helped and saved the lives of vulnerable people across Jonglei state during the December 2013 crisis which devastated the state capital.
SSRC director, David Gai Deer said the objective of the celebration was to recognize the effort of volunteers and to encourage communities in assisting in their daily services to the vulnerable population and to enable the public understand the meaning of being volunteers in their own communities.
SSRC has been delivering relief assistance to the most affected population across the state including, Bangachorot, Panwel, Pariak and Malek.
